Greening Michigan Tech
HOUGHTON, MI
(Michigan Radio) -
Students in the Green Campus Enterprise class study Michigan Tech's carbon footprint. A carbon footprint measures the amount of greenhouse gases a person, group, or business puts into the atmosphere. As part of their homework, students make suggestions to university officials about how to reduce the school's carbon footprint.
Chris Wojick is the class advisor. He says students are basically working as consultants and the university is their client.
"The students are capable of doing this kind of work with the right guidance as opposed to just hiring a consultant or staff to do it. And it's a tremendous learning experience for the students as well."
At the end of the semester students present their research to the university's president and vice presidents. Suggestions from last year's class have already been approved by school officials. They include an energy-saving competition for the dorms, dubbed the "Eco-Olympics."
