Detroit Bus Service Cuts Off The Table
(2009-08-27)
(Michigan Radio) - Detroit residents will not lose their weekend bus service - at least not for now.

Hundreds of Detroiters came to public hearings across the city this week to show their opposition to Mayor Dave Bing's proposals to limit bus service.

Bing was considering stopping bus service at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and eliminating Sunday service to save money.

Henry Gaffney is president of the union that represents Detroit bus drivers. He had something to tell the crowd at the Northwest Community Center last night.

"With you coming out this week, as of just a half hour ago, the mayor has rescinded all the layoffs and is going to keep weekend bus service," Gaffney said.

Gaffney says there's no guarantee that bus cuts won't be back on the table.

He also says the large turnout of residents at the meetings this week may have led to the mayor's decision to hold off, for now.
