Detroit Teachers Protest Concessions Demand
Detroit Public School teachers rallied downtown today to protest proposed cuts to their contracts.
"What do we want? Contract. When do we want it? Now." chanted the teachers outside the Fisher Building.
Hundreds of DPS teachers marched along West Grand Boulevard to protest $45 million in concessions the district is asking them to make, including include increased health care contributions and a 10% pay cut for five years.
Joe Hartman teaches at Priest Elementary. He says he's willing to compromise on the health care, but, "To take a 10% wage cut for 5 years, who knows how long it'll take to get back. Ten years from now we could conceivably make what we make now when you figure in the inflation and everything else."
