Final Michigan State Fair?
The Michigan State Fair gets underway in ten days for the 161st and possibly last time.
The fairgrounds along Woodward Avenue in Detroit is rousing from its nearly year long slumber, with carnival rides and concession stands going up.
The state fair is a century old tradition in Detroit. But it's a tradition that may be ending. Governor Granholm says with a two billion dollar state budget hole, the state can longer afford to cover the fair's annual financial losses.
Fair General Manager Robert Porter met with the Governor this morning. He says the governor listened but made no move to indicate she would change her mind about state fair funding.
"The executive order rescinds funding for these grounds...and dissolves the state fair board on September 30th," says Porter.
