Cockrel Looks Ahead
(2009-08-05)
Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel
(Michigan Radio) - One-hundred and sixty eight candidates competed for a spot on Detroit City Council in last night's primary election. But only eighteen can move on to the November election. Ken Cockrel Jr. is one of the lucky ones. Ken Cockrel Jr. says Detroit's City Council will look different after the November general election. But he says he still wants to be part of the mix and that he has something to bring to the table.

"I think it's important we diversify our economy. We are the birthplace of the modern automobile industry, but we can't keep putting all of our eggs in that basket. We need to bring different types of businesses and different types of industries to the city of Detroit."

Cockrel says the city must fix its financial problems and make the streets safer.

About seventeen percent of registered voters cast ballots in yesterday's primary election. Ken Cockrel Jr. came in second for Detroit City Council. Former television reporter Charles Pugh came in first.
