Congressman Insists Wife's Guilty Plea Doesn't Effect Him
(2009-07-18)
City of Detroit (Steve Carmody, Michigan Radio)
(Associated Press) - A powerful Michigan congressman says his role as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee has not been compromised by his wife's guilty plea in a Detroit corruption case.

Rep. John Conyers made the comments Saturday when asked about his high-ranking congressional post. The Democrat was attending a public event to announce his endorsements for the Detroit City Council primary election Aug. 4.

A federal grand jury has indicted a political consultant on corruption charges, accusing him of working with the Conyers' wife to shake down businesses for bribes in exchange for favors.

The new charges came less than three weeks after Monica Conyers pleaded guilty to accepting bribes from a sludge hauler and quit the Detroit City Council.

Prosecutors have said John Conyers knew nothing of his wife's wrongdoing.
