AG Files 18 Fraud Counts Against "Foreclosure Rescue" Operations In Michigan
(2009-07-15)
(Michigan Radio) - Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has filed 18 fraud charges against companies that claim to offer help to people in foreclosure.

The charges are against four companies and one individual for committing foreclosure fraud. The attorney general's office says it's been investigating the alleged frauds for months with undercover agents. The office also identified 17 other companies where customers have complained of fraud, but there wasn't enough evidence to charge those companies with a crime.

Matt Frendewey is a spokesman for the Attorney General. He says any foreclosure relief company that asks for payment upfront is scamming you.

"Michigan law explicitly states that a company who wants to help a consumer with their home mortgage or their loan to renegotiate or work with their lender - that company cannot charge upfront for their services," Frendewey says.

He adds that anyone who suspects they may have been the victim of a scam should contact the Attorney General's office.
