Michigan Tracks Racing to the Finish Line?

(Michigan Radio) -

Congress is revving up legislation to aid Michigan's motor racing tracks.

Owners of Michigan racetracks, from the behemoth Michigan International Speedway to the smallest go-kart race track, write-off their facilities costs the same way.

Speedway president Roger Curtis says current bookkeeping rules allow track operators to spread out their construction costs in a way that makes business sense.

But, federal regulators want to change the rules. Curtis says that would negatively affect Michigan tracks.

"Particularly some of the smaller facilities, not being able to write off that much, as quickly depreciate some of the assets they're investing in," says Curtis, "Yeah, that really going to give them a lot more pause than really some of the bigger facilities. But I can tell you. It would give us pause right now."

Congress has until December to set the bookkeeping rules in stone, before the current law expires.
