Conyers Officially Off City Council
Conyers announced her resignation last week - days after pleading guilty to a bribery charge in federal court.
She was the second-highest vote-getter in the 2005 elections, making her city council president pro tem. Councilwoman JoAnn Watson will become the new president pro tem.
Conyers' seat will remain vacant through the end of the year. That's expected to have an effect on some votes, including whether the city council rejects a deal to lease the city's convention center to a regional authority. Conyers led an effort earlier this year to reject a similar deal.
Conyers' name is expected to remain on the August 4 primary ballot - although election officials say she her felony conviction will nullify any victory she might see at the polls.
