Monica Conyers Resigns from City Council
Conyers pleaded guilty in federal court on Friday to accepting money in exchange for her vote to approve a lucrative city contract. Conyers was the swing vote in a deal with a Houston sludge disposal company.
She faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when she's sentenced.
City Council President Ken Cockrel had promised to hold a vote to strip Conyers of her committee assignments, and to initiate removal proceedings against her.
With her resignation, she avoids being forced out office.
Conyers is the wife of U.S. Congressman and House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers.
