Monica Conyers Resigns from Detroit City Council DETROIT, MI (Associated Press) - Convicted felon Monica Conyers has resigned from the Detroit City Council, effective July 6.

Conyers' letter of resignation was received Monday morning by Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey.

Conyers says in the one-paragraph memo her staff "will be available until December 31, 2009 to assist in the offices of my colleagues."

The 44-year-old Conyers, the wife of Democratic congressman John Conyers, admitted Friday to taking cash from a Houston company in exchange for her vote on a $47 million, sludge-treatment contract.

Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. called earlier Monday for her to step down. Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox also said he would begin court action if she didn't resign by Tuesday. © Copyright 2012, Associated Press
