Democratic Lawmaker Alma Wheeler Smith Will Run for Governor
(2009-06-29)
(Michigan Radio) - This isn't the first time Alma Wheeler Smith has run for governor. She ran back in 2002, but ultimately dropped out of the race.

The Washtenaw County democrat was elected to the state senate back in 1994, and has been in the house since 2004.

Bill Ballenger edits the newsletter Inside Michigan Politics. He says the chances of Smith beating current Lieutenant Governor John Cherry in the democratic gubernatorial primary are slim to none:

"And since she ran before and didn't go through to the race, you could speculate that the same thing could happen again."

Smith is hosting a campaign kickoff event Monday night at Washtenaw Community College.
