State Lawmakers Look at Future of Mass Transit
ANN ARBOR, MI
(Michigan Radio) -
It's called Magnetic Levitation, or Maglev, and if the state says yes, Michigan could be the first in the country to have the high speed public transit system.
A group of bipartisan legislators held a public hearing to talk about the proposed line. It would link Detroit, Ann Arbor and Lansing, and cost about $2 billion, all of which would come from private funding.
Republican Representative Bill Rogers heads up the task force. He says, even though the Maglev line is expensive, all options for mass transit are on the table:
"We need mass transit in the state, we're looking at green technology, and we need jobs. This appears to cover all three avenues."
Three more public hearings are scheduled. Rogers says once those wrap up in mid August, the task force will hand their findings over to the Governor. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
