House Committee Approves Money for State Troopers
A state House committee voted to keep the jobs of about 100 state troopers whose salaries were cut from the budget.
The committee allocated $1.8 million in tax revenue from Detroit casinos to pay for the troopers.
Republican state Representative Paul Scott introduced the legislation. He says some budget cuts are made along party lines.
"But when it comes to public safety, I think everyone Republican and Democrat alike can, and at least should, agree that that money should be reinstated. And I don't care how it gets done," says Scott, " I'm going to keep pushing the issue until it gets done."
Scott says the last thing the state should do is pull troopers off the roads when Michigan prisons are being shut down and paroling additional prisoners. © Copyright 2012, MPRN
