(Michigan Radio) - The Ford Foundation awarded the DSO a $1 million grant, to be divvied up over the next three years.

The grant is tied to DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin, and will mostly be used as to market the maestro and get new members to donate.

Anne Parsons is president of the DSO. She says the grant couldn't have come at a better time:

"It's crucial because we've lost a lot of donors this year, understandably. And we'd seen it coming. So this was part of a strategy for them to step in at this point and help us bridge the gap."

Parsons says the orchestra needs to raise $2 million by the end of August to stay out of the red. The DSO has already made close to $2 million worth of cuts to its budget.
