Hundreds Show Interest in Detroit City Council Run
(2009-05-11)
City of Detroit (Steve Carmody, Michigan Radio)
(Michigan Radio) - Tomorrow is the deadline for people to turn in petitions to run in upcoming city elections in Detroit. And so far, there's a whole lot of interest in becoming a city council member.

As of late Friday afternoon, close to 500 people had pulled petitions to run for city council.

Detroit political consultant Steve Hood says the huge interest shows there's a lot of political unrest in the city, and that people are tired of the status quo.

"And it also says something else," said Hood. "There are some people in that group - not all of them, but there's some people in that group that really want a job. Think about it - you've got, what a $68,000 a year job, a car, a cell phone and a staff, and you're on TV every night? Alright? That's one heck of a job."

So far, only a fraction of those who've requested petitions have turned them back in with the required number of signatures.

Voters will select 18 city council candidates in the August primary, and elect nine in November.
