(Michigan Radio) -

Local governments will have to cut essential services, now that state lawmakers have approved a $41 million reduction in state revenue sharing.

The money is used to supplement local government revenue.

Summer Minnock is with the Michigan Municipal League. She says without the money, cities and towns will need to cut spending for public safety and other essential city services.

""A cut like this does not come untouched or unseen by the average citizen," says Minnock, "These are decisions that are going to have to be made that will impact everyday life for people in our community."

Minnock says it's time for state government to rethink how it invests in local communities.
