The Flint school board has approved a budget that includes closing eight schools over the next two years and giving layoff notices to more than 200 staff members.

Officials say the closures, which were approved Wednesday night, would save the district about $3.9 million.

The district will close Central High School and Anderson, Civic Park, Garfield, Merrill and Stewart elementary schools at the end of this school year. Coolidge and Wilkins elementaries will close the following year.

The plan to close the seven elementary schools is based on building cost, capacity and condition.
