(Associated Press) -

Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra has officially filed to run for governor.

Hoekstra turned in his paperwork Monday to the Michigan secretary of state.

He says he's running as someone who has been able to translate his business skills into the political arena, and that he wants to rebuild and reinvigorate the state.

The 55-year-old from Holland is the latest Republican to jump into the race to replace Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who can't run for re-election because of term limits.

Other likely GOP candidates include state Sen. Tom George, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Attorney General Mike Cox and Ann Arbor venture capitalist Rick Snyder. Other possibilities include Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and businessman David Brandon.
