State Fair on Budget Chopping Block
(2009-02-02)

(Michigan Radio) -

Governor Jennifer Granholm wants to end all public financing of the Michigan State Fair.

The governor wants private companies to partner with the state to create jobs on the 160-acre site in Detroit or the fair may have forced to do what other cash-strapped states have done.

Fair general manager Steve Jenkins says some states have made their fairs a non-profit enterprise or created endowments.

The cut will made as part of Granholm's State of the State address tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, this year's state fair will go on as planned, but it will be eliminated from the 20-10 budget if the legislature approves.
