Michigan Cities Want Share of Economic Stimulus
Cities and towns across Michigan are hoping for a big share of any federal stimulus plan the Congress may pass.
Tomorrow, the Michigan Municipal League plans to release a list of local public works projects totaling over three billion dollars.
President-elect Obama has talked about the need to spend economic stimulus funds on rebuilding the nation's aging infrastructure. While most of the attention has been on major projects, like building highways and bridges, local communities say they have needs too.
Arnold Weinfeld is the director of Public Policy with the Michigan Municipal League. He says cities, large and small, need federal help to replace crumbling streets and aging sewer systems.
"We're just trying to make sure folks are ready when this money becomes available," says Weinfeld.
Obama officials have said the federal funds will go to projects which are 'shovel-ready.' But, its unclear how much of the money will be channeled to smaller, local projects © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
