The Slatkin Era Begins
(2008-12-09)
Maestro Leonard Slatkin
(Michigan Radio) - When Leonard Slatkin takes the podium as the DSO's 12th music director on Thursday, audiences will be greeted by the sounds of Giuseppe Verdi.

Slatkin is perhaps best known for his revitalization of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra some twenty years ago. But Slatkin says he doesn't feel any pressure to do for Detroit what he did for St. Louis:

"My job is really just to come make music as best I can, have an agenda for the orchestra and the public. Whether or not it rejuvenates - whatever word one wants to use here - is really up to other people."

Slatkin says his five year plan for the DSO includes tours, recordings and education outreach.
