U of M Study: Prostate Cancer & Married Men
New University of Michigan research shows married men are more likely to get tested for prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States.
Early detection is seen as key to long term survival.
U of M researchers have found that married men or men living with with significant others are much more likely to be screened for prostate cancer. This is true, even for single men with a family history of prostate cancer.
Researcher Lauren Wallner says this study suggests including loved ones in prostrate screening promotions could be beneficial.
"This is a factor that could be somehow targeted in order to get more men in for screening," says Wallner.
The study appears in December issue of Cancer Epidemiology. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
