DSO in the Red
(2008-11-26)
(Michigan Radio) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has joined the growing list of Michigan organizations that are operating in the red. Michigan Radio's Jennifer Guerra has the story:

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra announced that it ended the 2008 fiscal year $500,000 short of its $31.5 million budget. Anne Parsons is president of the DSO. She says that shortfall won't have an immediate impact on the DSO's operation, but the real question is how the DSO will fair next fiscal year:

"We have a very slow start in the fall. I would say it was something close to paralysis in October for a lot of patrons. They weren't going out. We didn't see sales."

That said, Parsons believes the DSO will be able to get through the year without making any significant program cuts.

The DSO isn't alone. The Detroit Institute of Arts was short $17 million for 2008. And the Michigan Opera Theater had to cancel one of its upcoming productions because of possible money problems.
