Karadzic Refuses To Enter Plea to War Crimes
THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS
(Associated Press) -
Radovan Karadzic is refusing to enter a plea at the U.N.'s Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in the Hague.
The former Bosnian Serb leader told the judge he would defend himself against charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. Prosecutors say Karadzic masterminded atrocities including the Srebrenica massacre and the siege of Sarajevo during Bosnia's war in the 1990s.
Karadzic had been in hiding for 13 years, before being captured last week. In court today, he appeared older and thinner than he had during the Bosnian war, after shaving the bushy beard and cutting the long white hair that had disguised him.
He listened as the presiding judge read a summary of the indictment, but said he was not interested in "having someone else read the indictment" to him. He refused to enter pleas to the 11 charges, saying he wanted "sufficient time" to study the indictment before entering a plea.
