Lawmakers Hold Hearing on Film Incentives
(2008-07-28)
(Michigan Radio) - In Traverse City today, state lawmakers are holding a public hearing on Michigan's new film tax incentives- the day before the city's annual film festival begins.

The state began offering tax credits or rebates for movie production costs a few months ago to help boost Michigan's economy.

The incentives are among the most generous any state currently offers. The Michigan State Treasurer says the incentives will be cost the state $100 million in the first year.

Jason Allen is the chair of the Senate Commerce committee. He defends the tax incentives. He says film producers are showing a lot of interest in Michigan.

"It's been a moving number and it's been very successful. My understanding is that we're at nearly $200 million worth of tax credits that have been asked for through this program. And it's amazing since it's only been in effect for four months."

Senator Allen says the state could double its investment with each incentive dollar.
