Fieger Acquitted

(Associated Press) -

A federal jury in Detroit has found prominent attorney Geoffrey Fieger not guilty of violating campaign finance laws.

The one-time lawyer for assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian and a law partner were accused of illegally funneling $127,000 to former U.S. Sen. John Edwards' 2004 presidential campaign.

The U.S. District Court jury returned its not guilty verdicts Monday afternoon in the case against the 57-year-old Fieger, of Bloomfield Hills, and 46-year-old Ven Johnson of Birmingham. It heard 18 days of testimony, then deliberated over parts of four days.

A federal grand jury indicted Fieger and Johnson in August on charges of conspiracy, causing the Edwards campaign to unwittingly make false statements, making illegal campaign contributions in another's name and making illegal campaign contributions from a corporation.
