Charities, Ramadan and Terrorism
The U.S. Justice Department is suggesting southeast Michigan's Muslim population be careful with their charitable donations.
The advice comes in advance of Ramadan which begins next week.
Federal agents have raided the local offices of several charities, in the past few months, that allegedly may have provided support to terrorist groups.
The charities, and those who contribute to them, have been the focus of several investigations.
Despite the raids, U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy insists people should not feel discouraged from giving to Islamic charities.
"Ya know the vast, overwhelming majority of charitable organizations, not just locally but around the world, do not find themselves on the U.S. State Department list of terrorist supporting organizations," says Murphy.
Murphy suggests people interested in making donations in advance of Ramadan should consult the federal government's list of charities under investigation for alleged ties to terrorist groups. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
