Police To Staff The Rapid Transit Center
(2007-03-08)
(Michigan Radio) - Grand Rapids police officers will now staff The Rapid bus terminal for a few hours each afternoon.

The decision is part of an agreement reached by Rapid staff, Grand Rapids Public School officials and police.

The Rapid shut its main terminal last week during the afternoons because of fights breaking out among its teen-age riders.

School officials expressed concern that students and other riders were being left out in the cold.

Jennifer Kalczuk is the spokesperson with The Rapid transit system.

"And there are some longer term solutions being considered, one of which is talking to students themselves and getting their input on how it might be solved."

City officials have suggested opening a YMCA activity center at the terminal.
