Ehlers Re-Introduces Great Lakes Restoration Bill
The Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Act is comparable to legislation passed by Congress to rehabilitate the Florida Everglades.
It includes recommendations such as fighting invasive species and cleaning up sediment.
The bill provides funding increases for agencies that oversee environmental and water protection.
The five lakes make up 1/5 of the world's freshwater resources and supporters say it merits national protection.
But it's not the first time Congress has seen the bill. An Ehlers spokesman says the re-introduction is to create awareness of the need of restoration and to build support within Congress.
Senator Carl Levin is expected to introduce a companion bill.
