Report: Michigan Home To 90 Thousand Migrants
(2006-11-29)
(Michigan Radio) -
A new report out today finds more than 90 thousand migrant farm workers and their families call Michigan home.

Michigan has the sixth largest migrant farm worker population in the U.S.

The migrants are concentrated in five western Michigan counties.

Martha Gonzalez-Cortez is the state director of the office of migrant affairs. She says, while other states are seeing a shift to more single, male migrant farm workers, Michigan is attracting more families.

Gonzalez-Cortez says more migrant workers are settling down in Ottawa and Oceana counties.

The study also found almost half of Michigan's migrant family members are under 20 years old.
