Guard units leave Delaware for Mississippi
(2005-09-01)
(wesm) - About seventy members of the Delaware
Air and Army National Guard will spend up to two weeks assisting
hurricane relief operations in Jackson, Mississippi.
Troops got a briefing and typhoid shots yesterday then headed
south in two C-130 aircraft from the 166th Airlift Wing.
Lieutenant Colonel Dallas Wingate says troops have a different
feeling being deployed on American soil than they do going
overseas. He says "this time it's personal" and says the mission
is about helping fellow Americans when they are flat on their back.
Staff Sergeant John French says he feels a special sense of
pride knowing he's helping fellow Americans.
Additional units -- including those with civil engineer and
medical personnel -- have been asked to prepare for the possibility
of performing follow up missions.
