Ocotillo On A Monsoon Morning(5:13) 2008-07-05
|
A morning hike in the Dos Cabezas Mountains. My mission was to photograph an interesting oak there called Sandpaper Oak. Really just a lame excuse to get myself out into habitat. It's a good area for a plant geek; Chihuahuan Desert Scrub and into scrub oaks and pinons.
The ocotillo on the slopes had finished flowering and seed capsules were dehiscing. I had to gather some of the small white wafer like seed. Several nurseries now offer home grown ocotillo. There is no reason to buy wild collected specimens anymore. I suppose it's okay if it is saved from a developer's blade, but why not stop the development and leave these beautiful desert residents where they belong. What a crazy idea!
