Hike to the Land of the Nodding Onion (4:46) 2008-05-03
|
It was a quest into the hills a little too late in the day to find a waterfall and a little too early in the season to find onions blooming, but this hike into a wet canyon had some nice surprises. The best surprise on this day though was on a sunny slope above the creek where we found a population of claret cup hedgehog cactus; clusters of Echinocereus topped with beautiful red flowers.
There are at least 6 varieties of claret cup found in the southwest. The population we found was Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. Neomexicanus and can be found as high as 7,000' in the mountains around you and me.
