There are three species of Zinnia in Arizona. The perennial species are Zinnia grandiflora or Prairie Zinnia with its yellow flowers and Zinnia acerosa or Desert Zinnia with its white flowers. The two cross paths sometimes at around 5,000' in the high desert and it is wonderful to see them blooming together.
Zinnia multiflora, the third species, is an annual and looks like a miniature garden zinnia with its cheery small red flowers. You can find it in the wild in the Mule, Huachuca, and Patagonia Mountains. Go look.
