Growing Native with Petey Mesquitey: Spadefoot Puddles
Petey sings about spadefoots in monsoon puddles. Oh dear.
near the banks of the ol' guajolote
Surely one of the highlights of the summer rainy season in southeastern Arizona is the emergence of the spadefoots. Three species are found in this region, but it is the Couch's Spadefoot that has the wonderful call that sounds like a bleating lamb. In some tanks out in the grassland hundreds of spadefoots will call after a monsoon storm and it is glorious cacophony. I think they're singing, "The desert is beautiful".
