Green on Red was one of the most successful bands to emerge from Tucson in the 80's, although they achieved much of their success after relocating to Los Angeles Green on Red was one of the most successful bands to emerge from Tucson in the 80's, although they achieved much of their success after relocating to Los Angeles. Originally formed in 1979 as the Serfers, the band frequently played such Tucson venues as Pearl's Hurricane, The Night Train, Tumbleweeds, and the Record Room.

They moved to LA in 1980 and soon changed their name to Green on Red so as not to be confused with the "surf punk" scene of Southern California. For 'surf punk' they were not. Green on Red was part of the so-called "Paisley Underground" collective of bands that melded 60's psychedelia and garage rock.

Dan Stuart and Chris Cacavas were the core of the band, and were joined by Chuck Prophet in the mid-80's. Green on Red released their first EP independently, and their 2nd EP was put out on Steve Wynn's "Down There" label, and then the band moved between large indie labels Slash and Enigma before striking a major-label deal with Mercury.

Cacavas left the band in the late 80's to work as a solo artist, and Stuart and Prophet persisted until the early 90's. Dan Stuart pretty much retired from the music world, while Chuck Prophet continues to have a successful career as a solo artist, heard frequently right here on KXCI.

A rare opportunity to catch the reunited Green on Red is just around the corner, as they will be appearing at the Club Congress 20th Anniversary celebration over Labor Day weekend along with 40 other Tucson bands, past and present. More information is available HERE.
