Growing Native with Petey Mesquitey: Monarda menthaefolia
Petey couldn't get to Monarda in the hills, but it came to him. Lucky dude.

I think Monarda menthaefolia or Bee Balm became a favorite plant when I first saw and identified it in the Gila Forest of New Mexico where our family would spend a couple weeks every summer. Greatest family trips ever and so Monarda became a favorite plant.
You don't need to go to New Mexico to find this beautiful Monarda. It's found in much of Arizona from 5,000' to 8,000' in elevation. And for gardeners in the uplands of southeastern Arizona, this is an excellent addition to a pollinator garden.
