30 Minutes features excerpts from a press conference convened by the Alianza Indigena Sin Fronteras (Indigenous Alliance Without Borders) on August 9th to commemorate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. This day has been recognized annually since 1994 in acknowledgement of the first United Nations working group on indigenous issues in Geneva, Switzerland in 1982.
Alianza Indigena Sin Fronteras states that it is an indigenous grass roots organization committed to promoting self respect and protection of indigenous rights including indigenous sovereignty and self-determination, rights of mobility and passage for indigenous members on both sides of the US Mexico order, indigenous worker's rights and environmental protection of native land and sacred sites.
Speakers include Yaqui ceremonial leader Jose Matus, director of Alianza Indigena Sin Fronteras; Michelle Cook, Dine', who is the youth representative for Alianza Indigena Sin Fronteras and a University of Arizona Native Scholar; and Tupac Enrique Acosta, Director of Tonatierra in Phoenix.
