Shorty Stubbs 1957-2007 (Part II)
The KXCI Community mourns the loss of a dedicated dj, musician and friend. Memorial events will be held on-the-air and at The Hut. Read on for more details. Chris "Shorty Stubbs" Jones was larger than life. He lived in Benson, worked at Raytheon, volunteered at KXCI and was a first-rate musician. From what I have been witness to over the last few months, Shorty loved music with a passion and made people smile by, well, just being Shorty. On Friday, September 14th, Chris "Shorty Stubbs" Jones passed away at his home in Benson. He was a friend to KXCI and more importantly each member of the KXCI family.

Shorty hosted Country Fringe, a music show on Tuesday evenings from 6-8 PM. Country Fringe is KXCI's home to country music both old and new. In addition, Shorty was a supporter of all things KXCI. On Tuesday, September 25th, KXCI will remember Mr. Shorty Stubbs with a special Country Fringe broadcast from 6-8 PM.

We would encourage you to leave your thoughts about Shorty below. We will use this space to post your comments as well as additional information about services and gatherings for our great friend and KXCI family member.

Thank you, Chris, for being a part of our lives.

I met Chris 25 years ago when we both worked at the same plant in Camden. Looking back those were the best years of my life and Chris played a huge part in that. I will never forget the "Hot check Wednesdays" at the Crossing.

He will be missed.

Now dangit man, who's going to finish the words to "Brokeback Dee-vorce Court" with me?

Too many songs were left unsung,
when your last-call bell rang.
Let your whiskey be as old as your angel girls young,
And the heavens resound with twang.

Chris---Our family will miss you deeply. You were apart of us for more than a decade. You always had a way to make everyone laugh at our Christmas gathering. We loved your special ties your wore are you hilarious Halloween costumes. Keeton and Ty loved to help you unload your car at Christmas--you were never short on giving. I know you always loved heading to Memphis to share your big heart and lots of Christmas shopping with your nieces and nephews. You were always so generous and never ask for anything in return. We always loved for you and Genia to come back to Banks, AR and visit. I know you wasn't to impressed with my southern cooking, but you always swallowed and said it was good! Chris, Genia stills has CoCo(your mother's little dog) spoiled rotten. You never failed to send CoCo birthday gifts and Christmas gifts after Genia return to Arkansas. I love you for taking care of my sister for so many years. You were a great Man with a big heart. I glad to hear that your neighbors has taken Peaches into their home. We will never forget our good times with you.

With all our hearts,

Don, Allison, Keeton, and Ty Hudson

My week was planned around Country Fringe. Couldn't go anywhere Tuesday evening unless they had a radio tuned to KXCI.
I hung out with Shorty a few times at Boondocks and other venues, and admired his performance with Sharla at the 2007 Folk Fest.

He will truly be missed.

Bye Shorty. Sad to see you go, but the road goes on forever and the story never ends...

The night we met Shorty he was on a date with Roselady, who happens to be our tenant. She mentioned that it was time to turn on her furnace, to which Shorty replied, "I'll give you $20 not to turn on that furnace. I can keep you warm, honey."
He continued to make us smile every time we saw him or heard his wonderful voice on the radio, playing great music. We will miss him so...

Shorty,

I always loved running into you, seeing you smile, and hearing your unmistakable voice on the radio or in a crowd. You were such a cut-up and a character--and I love characters! I'll miss your big ole heart. For a small man, you left us with boots too big to fill.

I loved Shorty Stubbs-still do. He was a bastion in the ambiguity that is the Tucson music scene.I'd walk in to a common venue and see Shorty smiling at me from across the bar, and it became home.He played what he loved. His enthusiasm for it was pure and genuine. His loyalty as a fan unparalleled. I am a better human to have known Shorty Stubbs. Thank you Shorty for making Tucson authentic.

Shorty, I'm one of so many who you touched. I only met you a few times, but listened to your show often, and am saddened by your passing. You elevated us all with your passion and generosity. Thank you for living your life in such an inspiring way. Know that we, your friends, will continue to be inspired by you.

The community of Mescal (near Benson) where Chris lived mourns him as well. There are no details available as to a funeral, memorial service, etc. and we would love to know.

I am the owner of Bobby Joe's Irish Pub in Mescal where Chris spent many many hours having fun. He was a great friend of mine and my late husband. He was a pallbearer at my husband's funeral, he was a great help to me after my husband passed away.
In the past several years I would only see him occasionally as he had quit drinking for the most part he said. I have many pictures of Chris on my photo gallery at my bar. He talked very enthusiastically of his dj'ing at your station. He obviously loved it. My late husband was also a radio DJ and a Movie Actor.
I only wish I could have known the day it was happening and maybe could have talked him out of it. He might have listened to me as he loved me very much!
I will try to be there Sunday evening and if you have any further details, there are a number of people here that would love to know!!. Thank you so much!

I had been out of town for 10 days and was glad to be driving home this past Sunday and listening to KXCI when I heard news of a Memorial Service for Shorty and called the station to hear the sad news.

Chris and I worked on a project at the bomb factory in the late 90's. I asked a lot of question and knew quite a bit about his family and friends and his life in Memphis. I listened to his stories and problems and he listened to mine. He played in a band, I believe in Memphis, and that is where he first got the name Shorty Stubbs. He was so happy when he did his DJ boot camp and then got the Tuesday night slot.

I wish I had made time to hear him play guitar, he was a good man with a great sense of humor. He was also an excellent engineer who tolerated little or no bull shit.

Chris, I hope you have found peace, I am sad that I have lost a good friend and coworker.

Cheers, Claude Evering

I hear your voice tonight on the radio. But I can't believe I won't see your smile tomorrow.

In the brief time I knew Shorty I truly feel as if I can call him a friend. I have shared song, drinks and laughs. He was encouraging and kind to everyone. I will be there on Sunday to celebrate his life. Many Thanks to the KXCI family.

Shorty Stubbs; everyone who knew KXCI, knew Shorty. After meeting him you could never forget him. He made everyone in his sphere, at any given time, feel comfortable, welcome, and good about themselves, not to mention those wildly entertaining stories he had to tell about living his life.

I've had the pleasure of sharing holidays with Shorty and was looking forward to his famous fried turkey this Thanksgiving, damn it.

Shorty, I will miss your smile, your incorrigible flirting, and your big 'ol genuine soul. I will miss your presence.

Happy trails and much love,
Mary Buckley

Hey Shorty.
Man, I can't believe I'm never going to see you walk across the "Hut" floor again, big ol' beer in your hand and a smirk on your face. "Now it can start," we'd say. "Shorty is here," and we'd talk to you as we set up the PA. You got a head start on us my friend, and if I'm really lucky I hope to catch up with you somewhere down the road.

Peace, brother.

How can you shed tears for someone you never knew when you hear of their passing? Just the thought of never hearing Shorty's voice again on Tuesday nights really got to me today when I learned the news. And, I am one who was never a huge fan of country music (sorry), but Shorty MADE ME a fan and I loved the music he played.

Thank you, Shorty, for introducing me to your wonderful music and making me feel I was part of your show, too. This is what I think you are saying right now to all of us (from an anonymous Native American):

"Don't stand by my grave and weep, for I am not there....I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamonds' glint on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn's rain. In the soft hush of the morning light, I am the swift bird in flight.
Don't stand by my grave and cry. I am not there........I did not die."

You live on in our hearts.

Judy

Chris,

I cherish the fourteen years that we had together. I miss playing golf, putt puttin (Where I did beat you "sometimes", shopping or just sitting around the house and listening to you play your guitar and sing some Bob Dylan. (You were Great!) Since I've been back in Arkansas, there hasn't been a day that I didn't think of you and I'm having a time coping with the fact you're no longer here with us, but you'll never be forgotten in my eyes and heart. You'll be deeply missed by my family and me.
Rest in Peace!

Love, Genia and CoCo(Warren, AR)

P.S. I am glad I got the chance to Wish You a Happy 50th Birthday!

I met Chris at work about 10 years ago. We didn't cross paths very often but when we did, we really enjoyed talking about guitars and music. I have an old Fender Starcaster that he tried to talk me out of. We kept saying that one day we needed to get together so that he could play that Starcaster. I really regret not getting together to jam with Chris. He was a down to earth, nice guy. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Still having a hard time coping with the fact that I don't see you here at work every day and that I will never hear you say "Hey Darlin - what's happening". I will treasure the MEMORIES, the gifts and the cd's you gave me. I am so glad I got the pleasure to know you aside from work.
You are one of the most genuine souls I've ever met. I checked on Peaches - the wonder dog, as I would of taken her, for sure. I am so glad to know that she is with your neighbors and they are very happy to have her. The last couple of weeks - people are sharing their stories. I look forward to meet some of them at the event this Sunday. I miss you Chris - Mr Shorty Stubbs.
My life is richer for knowing you - thank you.

Thoughts and Prayes to the Jones family and friends.

I met Chris some time in the mid 90s, when he and some others transitioned to Tucson, from Camden. We worked on various Test Equipment projects together, like Sparrow, Maverick and ESSM misslies. I never knew he was a musician, nor that he was known as 'Shorty Stubbs'.
I knew him only as Chris, a very professional engineer. Yes, we'd joke around about things like 'Upper Mis-Management', but he took his work seriously. Much as (I am now discovering) he took his music, making countless friends.
Chris will be dearly missed!
