COLUMNS
The band was born in the Old Pueblo in 1994 and released their first record ¿Freaks¿ in 96. After an appearance at South by Southwest in Austin Texas, the next couple of years saw Greyhound Soul touring throughout the Southwest, releasing three more records, 2001¿s ¿Alma de Galgo¿, 2002¿s ¿Down¿ and a European-only release in 2003: "Live & Dusted Volume 1."
The distinctive sound of Greyhound Soul is typified in the whiskey-and-cigarettes vocal style of singer/songwriter Joe Pena, who, along with bassist Duane Hollis, has formed the core of the band over their 11-year existence. During that time, they've made use of 4 of Tucson's most popular drummers: Tommy Larkins, Winston Watson, Bruce Halper, and original drummer Alan Anderson, who is back in the fold in the current incarnation of the band. Guitarists have included Jason DeCorse and Larry Vance, with Robin Johnson currently filling that role. And at various times, Bobby Hepworth and Glen Corey have added their keyboard skills to the band.
Part of the magic of Greyhound Soul is not knowing which of these many musicians will be playing in the band at any given time, for every combination has it's own beautiful chemistry. Pena crafts his songs with memorable hooks and heartfelt lyrics, and then the band seems to take a page from the jam-band book by stretching the tunes out to epic-length proportions. The result, particularly in their live shows, is quite simply an amazing experience... and Greyhound Soul has been a favorite of Tucson music fans for over a decade, winning numerous accolades in the annual Tucson Area Music Awards.
Like many of their desert-rock brethren, Greyhound Soul has also found success in Europe, having toured there four times in the past few years, and is currently planning their fifth trip across the pond to coincide with the release of their next studio album. In the meantime, the opportunity to catch Greyhound Soul presents itself on Labor Day weekend, when they will be part of the Club Congress 20th Anniversary celebration. 40 Tucson bands from the past 2 decades will convene on 3 stages over 3 nights, with 20 bands reuniting specifically for the event.
