Can the Los Angeles Bus Riders Union organizing strategies based on civil rights, economic development, and environmental justice be implemented in Tucson?by Amanda ShaugerTucson, ArizonaFrancisca Porchas and Chantal Coudoux from the Los Angeles Bus Riders Union. They were invited by Tucson's Bus Riders Union Organizing Committee to speak at a rally at the Armory Park Center in January. They provided input and guidance on how to mobilize bus riders around issues of civil rights, economic development and environmental justice. The Tucson Bus Riders Union Organizing Committee began the process of mobilizing a union after the proposal to transfer Sun Tran to the Regional Transit Authority (RTA). The union will focus on a variety of issues around ongoing access to transportation, including affordable bus fares, keeping the Ronstadt Center in Downtown Tucson, and maintaining existing routes.
