Tom Hayden Part 3 (30:14) 2008-12-28
Hayden began writing 50 years ago for the University of Michigan student paper. He was a founding member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and drafted the Port Huron Statement which depicted the vision of this new student movement.
He was a leader of demonstrations at the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention and was later famously tried along with 7 others in the Chicago 8 trials.
Hayden would go on to organize the Campaign for Ecomnomic Democracy in California. In 1982 he was elected to the California State Assembly and the State Senate 10 years later for a total of 18 years in the California legislature.
He is the author of numerous books and currently blogs for the Huffington Post and is on the editorial board of The Nation Magazine.
