St. Louis to get more transportation dollars
(2009-03-10)
(St. Louis Public Radio) - The city of St. Louis appears to be getting more federal stimulus dollars for transportation projects.

St. Louis originally was supposed to get just $5 of the $164 million slated for the region.

But an updated list from the Missouri Department of Transportation includes another $17 million for the Tucker Boulevard Viaduct.

East-West Gateway Council of Governments Transportation Director Jerry Blair says that's good news as the bridge north of downtown has been closed for a while.

"The city simply hasn't had the money to improve the bridge or reconstruct the bridge to open it," Blair said. "So it's rather an important project particularly with the construction of the new Mississippi River Bridge and the better access it will give to the north side of the city."

Blair says he's concerned that the viaduct is not on MoDOT's project list for this year.

That means the city will have to begin construction within the year or lose the stimulus dollars.

In a statement St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said the additional money was still not enough for the city, especially because St. Louis provides more than half of the federal tax revenue from the state of Missouri.
