St. Louis Police Department calls for audit of itself

ST. LOUIS, MO (St. Louis Public Radio) - The Board of Police Commissioners for the Metropolitan Police Department has asked State Auditor Susan Montee for an audit of the Department's towing practices.

The move comes after reports from the Post Dispatch that revealed a questionable relationship between the department and Metropolitan Towing.

Specifically the towing firm may owe the city as much as $700,000.

Acting Police Chief Stephen Pollihan called the problem an "oversight" and vowed the money would be returned.

"We are going to be able to tell everyone clearly, what has occurred and the steps that we've taken to fix it and we are going to get ever dime back that's owed the city or the police department."

The state audit comes in addition to an ongoing investigation from the U.S. Attorney's Office and internal department investigation, both announced today.
