The St. Louis board of Police Commissioners is asking federal authorities to widen their investigation into a tow yard amid new revelations about a contract the city police department had with St. Louis Metropolitan Towing.

Chief Joe Mokwa was forced to retire in July after it was revealed his daughter and several police officers were allowed to use and purchase vehicles seized by Metropolitan Towing.

And now, the Post Dispatch reports Metropolitan towing shorted the city nearly $700,000. The paper says the tow lot failed to share 60 percent of the money paid to it by people retrieving their seized cars between August of 2006 and April 2008.

The report also says the police department ignored advice from both private and state auditors who said the department should do a better job overseeing the towing contract.
