UAW rallies in Fenton over plant closing
(2008-09-10)
UAW Rally, Fenton, MO (KWMU)
(St. Louis Public Radio) - Hundreds of auto workers rallied outside the Chrysler minivan plant in Fenton Wednesday. Chrysler will close the south plant on Oct. 31 and has already cut its Fenton north plant to one shift.

The company is moving minivan production from Fenton to Windsor, Ontario. UAW local 110 President Joe Shields says Chrysler should manufacture the vehicles where they sell them, and he says that is overwhelmingly in the United States.

"These Canadian workers will be working around the clock on a three-shift operation to produce the minivan, while [we] are thrown out to the street," Sheilds said.

About 1,500 people work at the minivan plant. Union workers will receive up to 95 percent of their paycheck for nearly a year. © Copyright 2009, St. Louis Public Radio
