Government warns parents about bassinet after two infant deaths

(St. Louis Public Radio) - Parents are being warned not to use a particular baby bassinet after two infants, one in Kansas and another in Missouri, were trapped and strangled in the product.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the "close-sleeper/bedside sleeper" bassinets made by Simplicity Incorporated can allow infants to slip through the side and suffocate.

Simplicity's 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets contain metal bars spaced farther apart than federal standards allow.

The CPSC said a 5-month-old Kansas girl died last week when she got stuck between the bassinet's metal bars. Last September, a 4-month-old girl from Noel, Mo., was also trapped and died.

The agency said SFCA Inc., the company that bought Simplicity in April, has refused to issue a recall.

The company said it is not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity. © Copyright 2009, St. Louis Public Radio
