It's called an earnings tax, and this election season it's become a hot topic because of Proposition A.
If passed, the ballot measure would force St. Louis and Kansas City to ask voters every five years whether or not to keep the tax.
And it would prevent any other Missouri city from putting an earnings tax in place.
St. Louis Public Radio's Maria Altman reports on the potential impact of Prop A on the state's two major cities and the smaller communities between them.
