St. Louis police commissioners are demanding a tow lot pay at least $450,000 they say is owed to the city and the police department.Last week police commissioners sent a letter to St. Louis Metropolitan Towing demanding the payment.
The letter followed a St. Louis Post-Dispatch investigation in September, and subsequent review by police. The newspaper says the towing company failed to turn over nearly $700,000 in fees to the city.
The department ended its relationship with Metropolitan in July after police revealed that the firm allowed many officers, and former Police Chief Joe Mokwa's daughter, to borrow the seized vehicles and buy some at deeply discounted prices. Mokwa was forced to retire.
Metropolitan said only that the matter is in the hands of its attorneys.
